Expression of villin in precancerous lesions and gastric
carcinoma and its clinical significance

Abstract: To explore expression of villin in normal gastric mucosa tissues, intestinal metaplasia(IM), dysplasia, and gastric carcinoma and its clinical significance. MethodsAn immunohistochemical method was used to determine villin expression. ResultsVillin was expressed in dysplasia cells but not in gastric mucosa. The positive rates of its expression in intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia, and gastric carcinoma were 85.0%(17/20), 66.7% (20/30), and 48.3%(29/60), respectively. It was also found that expression of villin had no relationship to tumor size, invasiveness, and clinical stage and metastasis to lymphnodes(P>0.05), however, expression of villin was significantly higher in well moderately differentiated cancers than in poorly differentiated ones (P<0.05). ConclusionExpression of villin in precancerous lesions and gastric carcinoma is downregulated and is closely related to tumor differentiation degrees. Villin is a good marker for screening different types of gastric carcinoma and has a certain guiding sense to early diagnosis and clinical treatment.
