Expression and significance of Connexin 43 on neural epithelium during neural tube defects

Abstract: Objective To investigate the expression of Connexin 43(Cx43) in neural tube and to explore its role in the pathogenesis of neural tube defects(NTDs). MethodsNTDs models were established in mouse embryo by overdose ratinoic acid(RA). The neural tube developmental condition and the expressed position and intension of Cx43 between the control group and the experimental group were determined by SABC immunohistochemistry method and analyzed by image processing system. ResultsIn the control group the neural tube well grew and closed up at the right moment. In the experimental group the neural tube was poorly developed and unclosed. Brain vesicle could not grow well. The Cx43 positive immunostaining located not only on the membranes but also in the cytoplasms of neural epithelium, and the Cx43 positive rate in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group（P＜0.05）. The expression of Cx43 had a temporal variability. Conclusion The hyperexpression of Cx43 may play an important role in the development of TNDs induced by RA.
