Expressions and significances of HER2 and p53 in different evolution stages of gastric adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Objective To evaluate the expressions of HER2 and p53 in chronic gastritis, precancerous lesions and gastric adenocarcinomas and to explore their roles in gastric adenocarcinomas. Methods The expressions of HER2 and p53 in chronic gastritis(102 cases), gastric dysplasia (158 cases, including 102 cases of low grade dysplasia and 56 cases of high grade dysplasia) and gastric adenocarcinomas(152 cases) were determined with SP immunohistochemical staining. The relationship and clinicopathological significance were analyzed. Results Immunohistochemical results showed that no positive expressions of HER2 and p53 were found in the tissues of chronic gastritis. The positive expression rates of HER2 in gastric low grade dysplasia, high grade dysplasia and gastric adenocarcinomas were 3.92%,28.57% and 44.09%, and those of p53 were 0%, 33.93% and 50.66% respectively. The expressions of HER2 and p53 gradually increased in low grade dysplasia, high grade dysplasia and adenocarcinoma (P<0.001). Positive correlations between HER2 and p53 were found in both high grade dysplasia and adenocarcinoma(r=0.465 and 0.505 respectively, P<0.001). Conclusion HER2 and p53 play important roles in gastric carcinogenesis.
