Abstract: Objective: To explore the effect of polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum on hyperphosphatemia in chronic renal failure induced by adenine. Methods: Ninety male Waster rats were fed adenine 300mg/kg·d for 15 days and were divided into five groups. The first three groups were fed 1.5g/(kg·d), 0.75g/(kg·d) and 0.375g/(kg·d) polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum, the fourth group was fed calcium carbonate and the fifth group had no drug. Feeding with adenine continued for 10 days in each group and with the corresponding drugs for 22 days. The weight and serum Ca, P, BUN, Scr, RBC, Hb, PLT and HCT were determined. At 22 days, the rats were killed and the kidneys were used!for analysis. Results: The serum phosphorus level was significantly decreased in the group fed polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum of 1.5g/kg per day compared with the normal group [(2.47±0.38)mmol/l vs (3.46±1.15)mmol/l](P<0.05). However, the serum calcium level was significantly increased in the calcium carbonate group compared with the normal group [(3.48±0.40)mmol/l vs (2.79±0.16)mmol/l](P<0.01). Conclusion: High dose polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum could efficiently reduce serum phosphorus levels in rats with chronic renal failure induced by adenine.
