Imaging features of granular cell tumor in the alimentary system

Abstract: Objective To explore the imaging features of granular cell tumor in the alimentary system, in order to improve the understanding of this disease and reduce the rate of misdiagnosis. Methods The imaging findings of 10 cases of granular cell tumors in the alimentary system were retrospectively analyzed. Of the 10 cases, 5 underwent barium meal test, 9 underwent plain CT scan, 7 underwent enhanced CT scan, and 5 underwent plain and enhanced MRI. Results All of the 10 tumors were singular, including 4 in the esophagus, 3 in the stomach, 1 in duodenum, 1 in ileocecum and 1 in rectum. Barium meal images showed well-defined filling defect in 5 cases. Plain CT scan showed slightly low density in 9 cases, including 1 case with calcification, and 1 with focal necrosis. Of 7 cases underwent enhanced CT scan showed 6 masses were mild homogeneous intensification, and 1 moderate homogeneous intensification; all masses were gradually intensified on multiple-phase scan. Plain MRI showed long T1 and short T2 signals in 5 cases; enhanced MRI showed mild to moderate intensification. Conclusion The granular cell tumors in the alimentary system have certain imaging features: benign traits on barium meal, mild or moderate gradual intensification on CT and MRI, and T2WI signal on plain MRI.
