Abstract: Adenomyosis, a condition resulting from the invasion of endometrial stromal and epithelial cells into the myometrium, is a common gynecological disease with an enigmatic pathogenesis and pathophysiology. Adenomyosis causes heavy menstrual blood loss and progressive dysmenorrhea, impacting negatively on the quality of life of the afflicted. Its clinical management is also a challenge. In this paper, we review the work mostly achieved by our team on this disease, hoping to summarize the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of adenomyosis, as well as the future direction of research.

Key words: Adenomyosis, Pathogenesis, Pathophysiology, Heavy menstrual bleeding, Dysmenorrhea
