Abstract: Objective To explore the relationship between health literacy(HL), maternal mortality rate(MMR)and infant mortality rate(IMR)among Shanghai residents. Methods The HL, MMR and IMR data from Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics and other literatures were used for descriptive statistical analyses to show the changing trends. Correlation and regression results between HL, MMR and IMR were obtained from Spearman rank correlation and generalized linear model analyses. Results The HL level had increased continuously from 6.97% to 25.36% between 2008 and 2017, while MMR and IMR declined. Spearman rank correlation analyses showed that there was a significant negative correlation between HL, healthy lifestyle and behavior(HLB), level of scientific health concept literacy(LSHCL), level of safety and first aid literacy(LSFAL)and MMR(the correlation coefficients were -0.817, -0.683, -0.783, -0.717, P<0.05), and IMR(the correlation coefficients were -0.833, -0.717, -0.883, -0.800, -0.683, P<0.05). Regression results indicated that HL, HLB, LSHCL and LSFAL had affected MMR and IMR(P<0.05), and LBML could affect IMR(P<0.05). Conclusion There is a significant negative correlation between HL, MMR and IMR. HL has an important impact on maternal and infant health. We suggest that government policies, community health promotion programs and HL monitoring programs should pay due attention to HL.
