Correlation analysis of treatment methods and medical expenditures of cancer patients in five counties of Shandong Province

Abstract: Objective To investigate the treatment methods and medical expenditures of cancer patients in rural areas and the relationship between them. Methods According to the geographical location and economic status, 1 003 cancer cases confirmed during 2011 and 2013 were randomly selected from five counties, including patients with breast cancer(female), lung cancer, intestinal cancer and gastric cancer. All patients were surveyed with questionnaire. Results The proportions of patients who were treated with surgery alone, surgery plus chemotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine and other treatments were 21.1%, 53.1%, 8.7% and 17.1%, respectively. The proportions of patients with medical expenditures <20 000, ≥20 000 and <50 000, ≥50 000 and <80 000 and ≥80 000 RMB were 16.3%, 47.2%, 20.8% and 15.7%, respectively. The influencing factors of medical expenditures were age, income, type of cancer, stage of disease and treatment type. Conclusion Cancer patients have to bear heavy medical expenditures, which are closely related to treatment methods. Early medical care, standardized clinical pathway and medical insurance can help to relieve patients’ financial burdens.
