Effect of long-term ethanol feeding on glycogen and structures of the livers of Wistar rats

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of a long-term ethanol feeding on the glycogen content and structure of the liver in rats. Methods48 rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: the ethanol groups A, B and C and the control group. Rats were subjected to ethanol of 0.5, 2.5, and 5g/(kg·d) in the experimental groups respectively and saline in the control group for 5 months. Different physical parameters, HE staining, PAS staining and the glycogen content( Colorimetry, SpectraMax M2,) were determined. ResultsCompared with group D, groups A, B and C showed a lower weight of body and liver. Glycogen levels of groups A, B and C decreased, and the glycogen decreased in an ethanol dosedependent manner. HE staining showed lots of lipid vacuoles and inflammatory cells in groups A, B and C relative to group D. On the other hand, PAS staining revealed a decrease of glycogen granules. ConclusionLong-term intake of ethanol influences the glycogen content and causes some damage to the structure of liver tissues.
