Diagnostic value of color Doppler ultrasound for patients with anterior tibial artery steal due to atherosclerotic occlusive disease in lower extremity

Abstract: Objective To explore the diagnostic value of color Doppler ultrasound for patients with anterior tibial artery steal due to atherosclerotic occlusive disease in the lower extremity. Methods A total of 30 patients were enrolled as the case group, while 30 healthy volunteers served as healthy controls(the control group). All patients received color Doppler ultrasound examination of the anterior tibial artery(ATA), medial anterior malleolarartery(MAM), lateral malleolus anteriorartery(LAM), medial posterior malleolarartery(MPM), and lateral posterior malleolarartery(LPM). The arterial diameter(D), blood flow direction and peak systolic velocity(PSV)were recorded. Results In the case group, there were 48 anterior tibial artery steal, 43 countercurrent MAM and LAM, 3 countercurrent MAM, 2 countercurrent LAM. Compared with the control group, MAM, LAM and MPM, LPM lumen widened, flow velocity increased, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05, P<0.01). Conclusion Color Doppler ultrasound can sensitively identify anterior tibial artery steal and permit quantification of the medial malleolus and lateral artery net. Therefore, it is significant in the clinical diagnosis of anterior tibial artery steal.
