Multi-slice computed tomography imaging for congenital sensorineural hearing loss in infants

Abstract: Objective To discuss the value of multislice computed tomography imaging (MSCT) in infants with congenital sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL). Methods74 infants with SNHL were subjected to MSCT. Axial highresolution MSCT scan and MPR reconstruction were performed on in all patients. The 3D reconstructions were performed on with the volume rendering technique on the workstation. Results 42 patients (84 ears) were normal and 21 patients (42 ears) had congenital inner ear malformations(of which 29 ears were accompanied by other malformations). Of the 63 patients with prespeech deafness, 1 patient (2 ears) had incomplete partition type I deafness, 4 (8 ears) had incomplete partition type II, 12 (24 ears) had vestibulelateral semicircular canal dysplasia, 13 (26 ears) had large vestibular aqueduct,3 (3 ears) had internal auditory canal abnormality, and 1 (1 ear) had bony external auditory canal absence. Of the malformations, all the axial, MPR and VRT images could display the site and degree in 37 ears. VRT images were superior to the axial images in displaying the malformations in 5 ears with Mondini malformation and 12 ears with secretory otitis media. Of the 11 patients with postspeech deafness, 8 patients (16 ears) were proved be normal, 3 patients (6 ears) had large vestibular aqueduct syndrome, 3 patients (6 ears) had secretory otitis media. Conclusion MSCT allows a comprehensively assessing for various congenital ear malformations by high quality MPR and VRT reconstructions,and it plays an important role in diagnosis of infant SNHL.
