Analysis of influencing factors of prolonged length of stay in a tertiary hospital based on generalized estimation equation

Abstract: Objective To analyze the distribution characteristics and risk factors of inpatients with prolonged length of stay based on generalized estimation equation(GEE). Methods Medical records of inpatients treated in a tertiary hospital in Jinan during Jan. 1, 2015 and Dec. 31, 2019 were collected. The influencing factors of prolonged length of stay were analyzed with GEE. Results A total of 7 613 inpatients with prolonged length of stay were enrolled, accounting for 1.00% of all patients included in the analysis. The departments with the highest number of patients with prolonged length of stay were Cancer Center, Departments of Pediatrics and General Surgery, and most patients had tumors. GEE showed that age, gender, admission route, inter-department transfer, comorbidities, surgeries, unplanned readmission, and discharge route were influencing factors of prolonged length of stay. Conclusion Prolonged length of stay has a significant impact on the overall average length of stay. Effective measures should be taken to strengthen the management of such patients, shorten the average length of stay and improve the utilization of medical resources.
