Clinical characteristics of novel coronavirus pneumonia in children in Jinan

Abstract: Objective To enhance the understanding of novel coronavirus pneumonia(NCP)in children, to provide reference for the early diagnosis and treatment and to prevent misdiagnosis. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed to review the clinical characteristics of children diagnosed with NCP treated at Jinan Infectious Diseases Hospital, Shandong University during 00: 00, Jan. 23 and 12: 00, Feb. 13, 2020. Results A total of 10 cases were involved, including 3 boys and 7 girls, median age 4 years, average 4.9 years. Of the 10 cases, 3 were mild and 7 were ordinary. The time from onset to diagnosis was 0-20 days. Fever was the initial symptom, and some patients had no symptoms. Laboratory tests showed normal/decreased white blood cell count, and normal/increased/decreased lymphocyte count. Chest CT showed bronchitis in 2 cases, pneumonia in 7 cases, and no obvious abnormality in 1 case. Conclusion NCP in children in Jinan is mainly ordinary type, fever is the initial symptom, and some patients have no clinical symptoms. NCP should be distinguished from other diseases to avoid misdiagnosis and disease progression.
