Abstract:

Objective   To investigate bone mineral density of adult men in Jinan city and provide basis for preventing osteoporosis. Methods   The study was designed as a cross-sectional study from January 2007 to June 2010 with 1214 males aged between 20 and 90years (average age, 57.3±16.0) from three communities in Jinan city  BMD at lumbar spine one to four, femoral neck, Word’s triangle, greater trochanter and total femur was measured by a DXA instrument (GE Lunar DPX-NT, USA). Result   BMD had a positive correlation with age between 20 and 35 years. A peak BMD was estimated at 1.121g/cm2 (standard deviation [SD]: 0.135g/ cm2) at the lumbar spine,1.026g/cm2 (standard deviation [SD]: 0.132g/cm2) at the femoral neck, 0.882g/cm2 (standard deviation [SD]: 0.169g/cm2) at Word’s triangle, 0.874g/cm2 (standard deviation [SD]: 0.122 g/cm2) at the great trochanter, 1.061g/cm2(standard deviation [SD]: 0.141g/cm2) at the total femur between 35 and 39 years. BMD at femoral neck decreased rapidly between 70 and 74 years and its cumulative loss rate was 18.71 percent at the femoral neck, 29.82 percent Word’s triangle, 13.73 percent at the great trochanter, 14.8 percent at the total femur between 80 and 84 years. The prevelance of osteoporosis by site of BMD measurement was 15.1 percent between 70 and 79 years, and 29.4 percent between 80 and 89 years. Conclusions   The data showed peak BMD of lumbar spine and femur at the regions of interest in Jinan. BMD decreased rapidly between 70 and 74 years in adult men. The prevelance of osteoporosis increased rapidly after 70 years old.
