Abstract: To investigate the significance of transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) in diagnosing paratracheal mediastinal lesions. MethodsTBNA procedures were performed by using a flexible bronchoscope in 168 consecutive patients who had a mediastinal mass diagnosed by CT. ResultsThe positive diagnostic rate was 92.9% for TBNA with a tumor diagnosis rate of 81.0%. A few patients had a little bleeding at the puncture site without mediastinal emphysema or infection. ConclusionsTBNA is an effective and safe way for obtaining cytologic specimens from intrathoracic lymph nodes and can rapidly provide diagnosis for paratracheal mediastinal lesions.
