Relationships between occupational burnout profiles and neuroticism, life quality among civil servants

Abstract: Objective To explore the profiles of occupational burnout among civil servants and analyze the relationship of these profiles with neuroticism and life quality. Methods A total of 597 civil servants were surveyed with Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey(MBI-GS), Chinese Big Five Personality Inventory brief version(CBF-PI-B)and Chinese Version of Short Form 8(SF-8). Latent profile analysis(LPA)was used to classify their occupational burnout. Regression mixture modeling(RMM)was used to examine the relationships of these profiles with neuroticism and life quality. Results The occupational burnout fell into 4 profiles: low burnout(40.8%), high burnout(14.0%), low sense of achievement(30.2%)and emotional exhaustion(15.0%). Taking low burnout profile as the reference, neuroticism predicted high burnout profile(OR=1.23), low sense of achievement profile(OR=1.08)and emotional exhaustion profile(OR=1.11). Different burnout profiles displayed different levels of life quality(P<0.01). The life quality scores of the 4 profiles from high to low were as follows: low burnout, low sense of achievement, emotional exhaustion and high burnout. Conclusion There are 4 profiles of occupational burnout with different characteristics among civil servants, which should be addressed with specific interventions.
