Abstract:

Objective   To analyze the MR imaging features of spinal cord ependymoma and to improve diagnostic accuracy. Methods   Twenty-seven patients with histologically proved spinal cord ependymoma were included. MR imaging feature analysis included tumor location, size, pattern of growth, signal intensity, cysts in or adjacent to the tumor, hemosiderin deposition, and enhancement pattern. Results   All tumors showed centric and expansible growth, and the average number of vertebral segments involved by tumors was 3.6. The tumors mainly presented with slightly long T1 and mixed long T2 signal intensity. 60% of the cases showed cysts in or adjacent to the tumors, 26% showed ‘cap sign’, and 90% demonstrated homogeneously or heterogeneously obvious enhancement. Conclusions   Spinal cord ependymomas have some MRI features, which are helpful to make correct diagnosis before operation.
