Anti-oxidative effect of grape seed extract in the human body

Abstract: Objective: To study the anti-oxidative effect of grape seed extract (GSE) in human body. Methods: One hundred healthy volunteers aging from 45 to 65 were randomly divided into two groups: the control group and the GSE-treated group based on the SOD, GSH-Px and MDA levels in serum. The GSE capsule was administered to the GSEtreated group 1g/d orally for 3 months, while no drugs were administered to the control group. The SOD, GSH-Px and MDA levels in serum were determined both prior to and after the experiment. Results: The SOD and GSH-Px levels were significantly higher in the GSE-treated group than in the control group (P<0.05), while the MDA level was significantly lower in the GSE-treated group than in the control group (P<0.01). Moreover, there were significant differences in the three indexes in the GSE-treated group between prior to and after the experiment (P<0.01). Conclusion: GSE has a significantly anti-oxidative effect in vivo.
