Abstract: Objective To explore the association between different orientations to happiness and suicide risk of medical students. Methods Stratified by grades, a questionnaire survey of undergraduate students in Jinan, Shandong Province was conducted using clustered sampling method. The revised suicide behavior questionnaire(SBQ-R)was applied to identify suicidal risks, while the orientation to happiness(OTH)scale was recommended for measuring different orientations. Results There were 2 197 questionnaires handed out and 2 074(94.40%)questionnaires were valid. According to the total SBQ-R score(≥7), 20.64% of participants had high suicide risk. The OTH scale was divided into four groups: high meaning-high pleasure(503, 24.25%), high meaning-low pleasure(545, 26.28%), low meaning-high pleasure(662, 31.92%), and low meaning-low pleasure(364, 17.55%), with statistical differences in SBQ-R scores(F=11.736, P<0.001). After adjusting to socio-demographic variables including academic performance, single-parent families, good sleep condition as well as economic level, Logistic regression model indicated that high meaning-high pleasure(OR=0.632, 95%CI=0.449-0.887)and high meaning-low pleasure(OR=0.604, 95%CI=0.430-0.848)were negatively associated with suicide risk. Conclusion The suicide risk of medical students is relatively high and students with high meaning life appear to have low suicide risk.
