Abstract: Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of preoperative red blood cell distribution width(RDW)in the peripheral blood of patients with esophageal cancer. Methods Clinical data of 284 patients with esophageal cancer undergoing radical resection during July 2010 and June 2011 were retrospectively analyzed. Another 125 healthy volunteers were collected as controls for comparative analysis. The patients were divided into high and low RDW groups according to RDW cut-off value based on receiver operating characteristic curve(ROC). The clinicopathological parameters were compared between the two groups. The parameters associated with increased RDW were analyzed using Logistic regression analysis. The RDW changes before and after surgery were evaluated. Results The median RDW value was significantly higher in the esophageal cancer group than in healthy control group(P<0.001). RDW was associated with age, gender, distance metastasis and tumor stage(P<0.05), but not with other pathological parameters(P>0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that old age and distance metastasis were significantly associated with increased RDW(P<0.05). The RDW value after surgery was significantly higher than that before surgery and the difference was statistically significant. Conclusion RDW can be used as an indicator of clinical diagnosis and condition assessment for patients with esophageal cancer.
