Abstract:

Objective   To discuss the major causes of unplanned reoperation in patients with operation for intracranial tumor and reduce the occurrence of reoperation. Methods   We retrospectively analyzed 92 unplanned reoperation patients with operation for intracranial tumor from the Department of Neurosurgery of Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University from January 2008 to December 2012, and discussed the predisposing factors of reoperation. Results   Remnants of the tumor, rapidly changing focal intracranial pressure and the peritumorous vascular injuries during the operation were the major predisposing factors of unplanned reoperation. Conclusion    Controlling the rate of residual tumor, avoiding rapidly changing focal intracranial pressure and decreasing peritumorous vascular injuries during the operation can reduce the rate of unplanned reoperation.

Key words: Intracranial tumor; Unplanned reoperation; Residual tumor; Peritumorous vascular injuries
