Abstract:

Objective  To investigate the changes of antioxidant ability in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and their normoglycemic first-degree relatives. Methods  58 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected as the diabetes group, 72 normoglycemic first-degree relatives as the observation group, and 35 healthy controls without a diabetic family history matched for age, sex and body mass index as the control group. Changes of superoxide dismutase (SOD), maleic dialdehyde(MDA), nitric oxide(NO), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX) and total antioxidant status(T-AOS) were compared. Results  SOD, NO, GSH-PX and T-AOS were significantly lower (P<0、05) and MDA was higher (P<0、05) in the diabetic group compared with those in the control group; SOD showed an increasing trend (P=0、058) and MDA showed a decreasing trend (P=0、052) in the observation group. But NO, GSH、PX and T、AOS had no significant changes. Conclusions  Antioxidant ability significantly declines in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and also shows a declining trend in their normoglycemic first-degree relatives.
