Abstract: To investigate the changes of basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF) in human bladder smooth muscle in patients with bladder outlet obstruction(BOO) induced by benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). Methods： Sixteen patients with other diseases and forty patients with BPH were included in this study. All patients were divided into three groups, a control group, an obstructive detrusor stability group and an obstructive detrusor instability group. bFGF was measured using an immunohistochemical study. Results： The immunohistochemical study indicated that bFGF was expressed in cytoplasm of bladder smooth muscle cells. The expression of bFGF in the obstructive detrusor stability group and in the obstructive instability group were significantly higher than in the control group (P＜0.05). But there was no significant difference between the obstructive detrusor stability group and the obstructive instability group(P＞0.05). Conclusion： The increased bFGF level of bladder smooth muscle cells is correlated with the alterations of bladder detrusor due to BOO, but may not relate to the detrusor instability.
