Latent class analysis of workplace psychological violence experienced by nurses and its association with job burnout

Abstract: Objective To identify different patterns of workplace psychological violence experienced by nurses from colleagues and to explore the association between different patterns of psychological violence and job burnout. Methods A total of 1,954 nurses in Shandong Province were surveyed with a self-compiled general information questionnaire, Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors Instrument, and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results The workplace psychological violence could be classified into three patterns: isolation from work/attack on the professional status type(C1, 24.7%), suffering from high psychological violence type(C2, 23.1%), and suffering from low psychological violence type(C3, 52.2%). The risk of job burnout was highest among nurses suffering from high psychological violence(OR=1.91, P<0.001), followed by nurses suffering from isolation from work/attack on the professional status(OR=4.64, P<0.001). Conclusion Three patterns of workplace psychological violence could be identified among nurses, including isolation from work/attack on professional status type, suffering from high psychological violence type, and suffering from low psychological violence type. The risk of job burnout is high among those who suffer from isolation from work/attack on professional status and high psychological violence. These nurses are the high-risk group for early screening and intervention in clinical practice.
