Reliability and validity of Chinese Version of the Cultural Value Orientation Scale and correlation between cultural value orientation and psychological health

Abstract: Objective To validate the reliability and validity of the Chinese Version of Cultural Value Orientation(CVO)among Chinese youth and to explore the correlation between cultural value orientation and psychological health of the youth. Methods A total of 938 Chinese youth were surveyed with CVO. The scales reliability and validity were analyzed with Cronbach α, exploratory factor analysis(EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA).The correlation between cultural value orientation and psychological health was analyzed with the general health questionnaire(GHQ-28). Results The Cranach α of familism, individualism and collectivism was 0.88, 0.73 and 0.84, respectively. The CFA models RMSEA indices were 0.04, 0.03 and 0.05(RMSEA≤0.05). Psychological health(GHQ)was significantly correlated with familism and collectivism(r=-0.24, r=-0.14, P<0.01), but not with individualism(r=-0.06, P>0.05). Conclusion The Chinese Version of CVO has good reliability and validity. Familism and collectivism have significant effects on psychological health.
