Abstract:

Objective   To compare CT variables of craniofacial morphology and upper airway between responders and non-responders to oral appliances (OA) in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients, to determine whether pretreatment CT variables can be used to predict therapeutic effects of OA therapy.  Methods   Nine nonresponders were randomly selected for this study. Their individually matched responders were selected and matched for sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and apnea and hypopnea index (AHI). All the patients received computed tomography. CT variables were measured and compared. Results   The ANB angle was smaller(P<0.05), and SNMP angle, velopharyngeal cross-sectional area and volume of velopharyngeal were significantly larger in the non-responders(P<0.05).  Conclusion   When treating OSAS patients with OA, clinicians should pay particular attention to craniofacial morphology and airway size, predict the therapeutic effects, and select the appropriate method.
