Abstract:

To research the etiology and the prophylacticotherapeutic measures of synovial chondramatosis around the  end of the nail or wire secondary to internal fixation of  fractures. Methods23 cases of synovial chondramatosis secondary to internal fixation of fractures were analyzed historically, pathologically and clinically.  ResultsSynovial chondramatosis was found in the end of the intromedullary nail in femur shaft fractures in 15 cases, and in the  end of Kirschner wires which fixed the fracture of metacarpus ,metatarsal and  ulna in an other 8 cases.  All the 23 cases of synovial chondramatosis were healed after resection.  ConclusionRepeated mechanical stimulation, overlong detaining period of the nail and the toxic effect of metal may constitute the main causes of synovial chondramatosis. Protective measures are avoidance of overlong detaining period of the nail, an adequate length of backshank and the  use of  latemodel nails.
