Safety of a unicameral dual purpose tracheal
catheter in esophagus operations

Abstract: To investigate the effect and safety of the unicameral dual purpose tracheal catheter in esophagus operations. Methods90 cases suffering from left thoracic operations were randomly divided to groups A and B. Group A was subjected to anesthesia with a unicameral dual purpose tracheal catheter, and group B with a double channel bronchial catheter. Airway resistance and lung blood shunt rate were checked. ResultWhen a unilateral lung was ventilated, the airway resistance was much lower in group A than in group B (P<0.05). ConclusionsEither a unicameral dual purpose tracheal catheter or a double channel bronchial catheter can give satisfactory unilateral lung ventilation, but the former has lower airway resistance and lung blood shunt rate than the latter.
