Expressions of EGFR, NM23 and BCL2 in hypopharyngeal cancer and their clinical significance

Abstract: To investigate expressions of EGFR, NM23 and Bcl2 in hypopharyngeal cancer and their correlation with clinicopathological risks. MethodsExpressions EGFR, NM23 and Bcl2 in 29 cases of hypopharyngeal cancer were determined with an immunohistochemical SP method. ResultsExpressions of EGFR, NM23 and Bcl2 in hypopharyngeal cancer were 62% (18/29), 79% (23/29) and 86% (25/29) respectively. The EGFR level in poorly differentiated cancer was significantly higher than that in well or moderately differentiated cancer (P=0.021), and the EGFR level in the group with unilateral and bilateral lymph node metastases was significantly higher than that in the group without lymph node metastases (P=0.018). However, expressions of NM23 and Bcl2 had no correlation with clinicopathological changes. ConclusionExpression of EFGR is correlated with pathological differentiation and lymph node metastasis, and EFGR may be a potential biomarker for assessing hypopharyngeal cancer. NM23 and Bcl2 need to be further warranted.
