Effect of the Tangshen capsule on nephropathy damage in diabetic rats: an experimental study

Abstract: To observe the protective effects of the Tangshen capsule on nephropathy damages in diabetic rats and explore the optimal dosage of Astragalus membranaceus in the drug. Methods Diabetic rats were induced by streptozotocin (STZ) and were divided into the diabetic model group(DM), the highdose treatment group (HDT group), and the lowdose treatment group (LDT group). After an 8week treatment, serum creatinine (Scr), urine albumin (UAlb), sorbitol content in red blood cell (RBCS), fasting blood glucose (FBG), fructosamine (FIM), triglyceride (TG), cholesterol (CHO) and the kidney hypertrophy index were determined. The ultrastructure of the rats′ kidneys was observed after PAS staining. The expression of intercellar adhesion molecule1 (ICAM1) was determined by the immunohistochemical technique. Results① Compared with the DM group, each treatment group had a higher weight, lower Scr, UAlb, RBCS, FBG, FIM and kidney hypertrophy index(P<0.05); ② Compared with the NC group, the expression of ICAM-1 was upregulated in the other groups. But in treatment groups, the above items were ameliorated(P<0.05) and they did the best in the HDT group. ConclusionThe Tangshen capsule can offer protection against kidney damage of diabetic rats and the optimal dosage of Astragalus Membranaceus is 120g per powder.
