Effect of Puerarin on Cathepsin S and Cystatin C during the procedure of vascular restenosis in balloon injured rabbits

Abstract: ObjectiveTo explore the effects of Puerarin on Cathepsin S and Cystatin C during the procedure of vascular restenosis after balloon injury. MethodsThe experimental models of vascular restenosis in rabbits were established by anendothelial injury induced by a balloon and hyper-lipid feed. The arterious restenosis area, expressions of Cathepsin S and Cystatin C, and the differences of collagen were determined. ResultsAt the end of 8 weeks after an endothelial injury by a balloon, the restenosis area in the Puerarin group(100mg/kg per day) was obviously smaller than that in the balloon injured group(P<0.05). The expression of Cathepsin S in the Puerarin group was lighter than that in the balloon injured group (P<0.05), however the expression of Cystatin C was not significantly different between the Puerarin group and the balloon injured group (P>0.05). Collagen in the intima was significantly decreased in the Puerarin group compared with that in the balloon injured group (P<0.01). ConclusionPuerarin has a regressive effect on vascular restenosis in rabbits by modulating the expression of Cathepsin S and reducing collagen accumulation in the vascular restenosis area, but it does not affect the expression of Cystatin C.
