Using Coping Style Questionnaire to investigate the effects of left-behind experience on emotional adaptation of college students

Abstract: Objective To analyze the relationship between coping style and emotional adaptation of college students with left-behind experience. Methods A total of 1 329 college students from six universities in Shandong, Beijing, Anhui and Sichuan were surveyed with Coping Style Questionnaire(CSQ), Self-Esteem Scale(SES), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Beck Depression Inventory(BDI). The results were tested with Mann-WhItney U, Kruskal-Wallis and Structural Equation Modeling. Results There were significant differences in self-esteem, anxiety and depression between the undergraduates with and without left-behind experience (Z=-2.53, P=0.008; Z=-3.21, P=0.001; Z=-2.62, P=0.009). Those with left-behind experience tended to choose negative coping styles(self-blame, rationalization)instead of positive ones(solving problems, asking for help). Multiple regression analysis showed the coping style could predict the emotional adaptation level. Conclusion The college students with left-behind experience tend to choose negative coping styles, and their motional adaptation is at a low level. Optimizing the coping style may be an effective way to improve their emotional adaptation level.
