Abstract:

Objective  To evaluate the feasibility of immediate breast reconstruction(IBR) following nipple preserving modified radical mastectomy in treatment of breast cancer. Methods  IBR using silicon prosthetic implants following nipple preserving mastectomy was performed on 22 patients with breast cancer from February 2005 to April 2009. All patients were treated routinely after operation. Results  All reconstructions were successful. No localrecurrence and no remote metastasis were found in  the 22 patients during the follow up of 6-56 months. Excellent aesthetic results accounted for 90.9% of the cases, while 9.1% were poor. Partial nipple areola necrosis occurred in 2 patients that were cured by dressing change, and 2 patients had slight prosthetic implant displacement. Conclusion  The cosmetological effect of IBR following nipple preserving modified radical mastectomy in breast cancer is satisfactory. It is a simple, safe and effective operating procedure suitable for patients with early breast cancer.
