Abstract: Objective: To survey the content of serum cholesterol and LDL in patients with gastric cancer before operation, and investigate the correlation between serum cholesterol,LDL and pathology grouping. Methods: One hundred and forty-three patients with gastric cancer were selected and grouped according to pathology after operation: the well-differentiated group consisting of papillary adenocarcinoma, 16 patients and tubiform welldifferentiated adenocarcinoma, 43; the moderately differentiated group including tubiform moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, 39; the poorly differentiated group including poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, 20; mucinous adenocarcinoma, 14 and signet-ring cell carcinoma, 11. In addition, 30 patients with gastric ulcer and 30 health adults were selected as controls. Veinous blood of every member was collected on an empty stomach, and then the content of serum cholesterol was surveyed by the enzymic method, Results: The levels of serum cholesterol and LDL before operation in gastric cancer decreased more significantly than those with gastric ulcer and normal people(P<0.05), but there was no statistical significance between the two controls(P>0.05). The levels of serum cholesterol and LDL were statistically significant in gastric cancer of different pathology groups. The contents of serum cholesterol and LDL in 40 patients with gastric cancer after operation were obviously higher than those before operation(P<0.05). Conclusion: There is a correlation between the level of serum cholesterol and LDL and the tissue differentiation of gastric cancer. The lower the tissue differentiation, the lower the level of serum cholesterol and LDL. Serum cholesterol and LDL can be used as useful indexes for judging the therapeutic efficacy of advanced gastric cancer.
