Toxicity of Euphorbia ebiacteolata Hayata water extract on mice

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the potential toxicity of Euphorbia ebiacteolata Hayata (EEH) water extract. Methods: The study was performed on inbred Kunming mice, using the traditional toxicological method based on observing ratios of micronucleus and sperm abnormity (RMS). The mice were randomly divided into 5 groups: a negative control with distilled water, a positive control with cytoxan(50mg·kg-1), and low dose, medium, and high dose of EEH extract(77g·kg-1, 144g·kg-1 and 288g·kg-1 respectively). Results: The results showed that the high and medium doses significantly increased RMS compared with the negative controls (P＜0.01, P＜0.005), but a similar result was not observed in the low dose group (P＞0.05). Conclusion: EEH can induce mutation and sperm abnormity in medium and high doses, whereas it cannot induce significant toxicity in low doses.
