Relationship between work-family balance and boundary flexibility of married nurses

Abstract: Objective To investigate factors influencing the work-family balance of married nurses in third-class hospitals, and to explore the relationship between different levels of boundary flexibility of nurses and work-family balance. Methods A total of 1 023 nurses were selected from 4 third-class hospitals in Shandong Province and surveyed with boundary flexibility questionnaire and work-family balance questionnaire. All dimensions of boundary flexibility, namely work flexibility ability, work flexibility willingness, family flexibility ability and family flexibility willingness, were divided into high score group and low score group according to the mean value. The flexibility ability and willingness in work fields were matched, and the family fields were also matched in pairs to understand the work-family balance of different matching groups. Results There were statistical differences in work-family balance, including work-family conflict, work-family enhancement, family-work conflict and family-work enhancement, in terms of presence or absence of underage children, working years and weekly working hours. The differences in work-family conflict(F=5.90, P<0.01)and work-family enhancement(F=3.22, P<0.05)among different groups were statistically significant. The differences in family-work conflict(F=28.41, P<0.01)and family-work enhancement(F=12.08, P<0.01)were statistically significant.
