Abstract:

Human corneal keratocytes are squamous cells located in the corneal stroma which are normally quiescent and dendritic. They are connected with each other via gap junctions for communication and substance exchange. Human corneal keratocytes play an important role in maintenance of corneal transparency. In this article, corneal keratocyte′s distribution, phenotypes, and functions and relation with corneal diseases are reviewed.

Key words: Human corneal keratocytes; Gap junction; Keratopathy
