Expression of ornithine decarboxylase in gastric carcinoma

Abstract: To investigate expression of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) in both mRNA and protein. MethodsWe extracted the total RNA from 21 surgically removed specimens of gastric cancer and normal mucosa close to lesions and conducted the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction with optimal condition. Semiquantitatively we compared the mRNA expression level of ODC between malignant and normal mucosa. Total protein was extracted from the same 21 surgically removed specimens. Westernblot analysis was used to compare the protein expression level of ODC between cancer lesions and normal mucosa. ResultsmRNA and protein expressions of ODC in lesions of gastric carcinoma were significantly higher than those in contiguous normal mucosa(P<0.01). ConclusionODC greatly influences the genesis and development of gastric cancer and may play a pivotal role in the metastasis and infiltration of cancer.
