Abstract:

Objective  To investigate the relationship between serum adiponectin and insulin resistance and to explore the effects of obesity and insulin resistance interaction on the adiponectin level.  Methods  176 subjects were divided into 4 groups: the insulin resistance with obesity, the insulin resistance, the obesity and the control groups. Variance and covariance analyses were used in this study.  Results   After ruling out the linear interference with adiponectin from gender, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the modified means of serum adiponectin levels in the four groups were 3.477μg/mL, 3.681μg/mL, 4.447μg/mL and 4.614μg/mL(P=0.033), respectively. Adiponectin in the insulin resistance with obesity group was significantly lower than that in the obesity group (P=0.036) and the control group (P=0.009). Conclusions  The relationship between serum reduced adiponectin and insulin resistance may be bi-directional. Both obesity and insulin resistance are independently correlated with serum adiponectin.

Key words: serum adiponectin; obesity; insulin resistance
