Ultra-structures of the vitreoretinal interface in human eyes

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the ultra-structures of the basal vitreoretinal interface in human eyes of different ages. MethodThe cellular elements were removed from the retinal surface after trypsin digestion in 11 donor eyes, and the retinal part of the inner limiting lamina (ILL) was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results Both SEM and TEM showed a progressive insertion of the basal superficial retina by bundles of collagen fibrils, which splayed out beneath the ILL in the young and finally formed a dense network in the elderly. ConclusionThe intra-retinal collagen fibrils penetrating the ILL and mixing with the cortical vitreous fibrils appears to underlie the slow adhesion of the vitreoretinal interface with aging.
