Abstract: Objective To investigate the correlation between the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL) and corresponding visual field defect in glaucoma patients. Methods Forty angle-closure glaucoma patients were enrolled. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed to obtain the thickness of RNFL in 6 positions of optic nerve head and the corresponding visual field sensitivity or visual field defect. Association was analyzed between thickness of temporal-superior RNFL and the visual field defect of nasal-inferior, between the thickness of temporal-inferior RNFL and the visual field defect of nasal-superior, between the thickness of mean RNFL and mean field defect. Results Linear correlation was found between the temporal-superior RNFL thickness and the nasal-inferior visual field defect (r=-0.83), between the temporal-inferior RNFL thickness and the nasal-superior visual field defect(r=-0.80). The negative correlation (r=-0.60) was found between the mean thickness of RNFL and the mean visual defect. Conclusion The thickness of RNFL can partly reflect the depth of the visual field defect.

Key words: OCT, RNFL, visual field defect
