Screening for breast diseases among 61,102 women in Shandong Province

Abstract:

 Objective     To gain epidemiological data of breast diseases in Shandong Province, China. Methods     A cross-sectional study was conducted in 61,102 han females from 6 cities of Shandong Province. All subjects underwent interviews and clinical examinations, and the prevalence of different breast diseases and the constitution were detected. The prevalence change of breast cancer in Shandong in different years was analyzed. Results      14,218 women suffered from breast diseases and the prevalence was 23.27%, including 13,247 cases of breast hyperplasia (21.6%), 341 cases of breast fibroadenoma (0.56%), 147cases of mammary duct ectasia (0.24%), 98 cases of breast cancer (0.16%) and 385 cases of other breast diseases(0.63%). The standardized prevalence of breast cancer was 131.8/100,000,with a peak age of 45 to 55 years. The number of patients diagnosed with having breast cancer from 2003 to 2008 was more than 1999 to 2003. Conclusion      The prevalence of breast cancer presents an increasing and younger trend. The screen and diagnosis for breast diseases should get standardized and strengthened in rural areas.
