Abstract:

To summarize the clinic and pathological characteristics of sinonasal mucosal malignant melanoma and discuss early diagnosis, optimal treatment and prognosis. Methods37 cases of sinonasal malignant melanoma in the Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from 1996 to 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. The clinic manifestation, diagnosis, optimal treatment and prognosis in this series were analyzed. ResultsThe optimal treatment is surgery. Thirtythree cases were surgically treated and 12 cases of local recurrence occurred postoperatively. The shortest survival time was 3 months. The main causes of death were local recurrence and distant metastasis. The 1, 3, and 5year survival rates were approximately 50%, 28%, and 20%. ConclusionThe main symptoms of sinonasal melanoma are unilateral nasal obstruction, epistaxis and blood streak nasal discharge. The optimal treatment is surgery. The recommended treatment for recurrence lesions is also surgery. Early diagnosis and early treatment will lead to improved prognosis.
