Perioperative application of intraaortic balloon pump in critical patients with coronary disease

Abstract: To evaluate the effect of the intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) in critical patients with coronary disease undergoing cardiac operations. MethodsThe clinical data of 38 patients undergoing cardiac operations with application of IABP from August 2001 to February 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. Results25 patients were cured and 13 died, and the mortality was 34.21%. In coronary disease patients with preoperative use of IABP, the mortality was 12.50% (1/8) and in those with intraoperative use, the mortality was 28.57% (6/21), both were much lower than that of the postoperative application group ［66.67%(6/9)］. ConclusionIABP therapy is a safe and effective mode of circulation support. Early application lowers the mortality.
