Eating disorder related psychological factors of university students

Abstract: To explore the correlations between bodyimage, perfectionism and social physique anxiety and eating disorder in university students. Methods400 university students were assessed by the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI), Multidimensional BodySelf Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), Chinese version of Frost'S Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and Social Physique Anxiety Scale(SPAS). Results①The scores of bodyareas satisfaction were lower in the eating disorder group who had a normal weight than in the other three groups, and the scores of FMPS were higher than them. ②Stepwise linear regression showed that bodyareas satisfaction, overweight preoccupation and appearance orientation were independent predictive variables of eating disorder symptoms. ③Principal components analysis showed that the main factors affecting eating disorder symptoms were fervent dissatisfaction of appearance and morbid pursuit for perfection. ConclusionBodyimage disturbance and perfectionism exorbitance are the key factors of eating disorder symptoms in university students.
