Abstract: To explore the relationships between the first febrile convulsions and herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection. Methods HHV-6 infection was determined by PCR in 75 children. The clinical characteristics of the first febrile convulsion were compared between those with and without HHV-6 infection. Results HHV-6 infection was found in 26 of 75 patients with the first febrile convulsions. The median age of patients with the first febrile convulsion and HHV-6 infection was significantly lower than those without HHV-6 infection(P<0.01). The frequency of partial seizures, clustering seizures, long lasting seizures, and postictal paralysis was significantly higher among those with primary HHV-6 infection than that among those without(P<0.05). The frequency of the first febrile convulsions in infants younger than 1 year and with HHV6 infection was also significantly higher than those without HHV6 infection(P<0.05). Conclusions HHV-6 infection has a close relationship with febrile convulsions in infants and young children and it often induces more severe convulsions and might be a risk factor for subsequent development of epilepsy.
