Effect of psychological treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome

Abstract: Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of psychological treatment on patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: Fiftyseven patients were enrolled in this study and were randomly divided into two groups: the experimental group (EG)and the control group(CG). Both groups were treated for 12 weeks. Results: After treatments, global symptoms and all the other symptoms except for abdominal distension, especially abdominal pain or discomfort were released in the EG (5.10±0.74 vs 3.10±1.10, P<0.05). The overall average scores of Symptom Cheecklist90, Hamilton Anxiety Scale and Hamilton Depression, also especially the scores of depression (2.45±0.03 vs 1.34±0.04, P<0.01) and anxiety (2.56±0.07 vs 1.46±0.07, P<0.01) were significantly decreased in the EG. Conclusion: Psychological treatment is an effective and safe treatment for patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
