Distribution of hepatitis B virus genotypes and subgenotypes in Shandong area

Abstract: To investigate the distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype and subgenotype in Shandong province. Method： HBV genotypes and subgenotypes were detected in 140 patients with HBV infection by using nested polymerase chain reaction based on genotype and subgenotype specific primers. Results: HBV genotype B, C and B/C were identified in 12, 109 and 8 patients, whereas genotype A, D, E and F were not found. All of the 12 HBV genotype B patients were detected as subgenotype Ba. Of the 109 genotype C patients, 74.3% (81/109) was subgenotype C2 and 25.7% (28/109) was neither C1 nor C2. Of the 8 genotype B/C patients, 5 were subgenotype Ba+C2 and 3 were Ba + neither C1 nor C2. Conclusions： Genotype B, C and B/C have been found in Shandong province, and subgenotype Ba inhabits the genotype B and subgenotype C2 predominates genotype C.
