Effect of retropositioning of the large omentum in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for postoperative nausea and vomiting

Abstract: Objective To explore the impact of greater omentum repositioning after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy(LSG)on reducing postoperative nausea and vomiting(PONV). Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted to collect the perioperative clinical data of 62 obese patients who underwent LSG in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, The Second Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from January 2023 to January 2024. Among them, 30 patients underwent greater omentum repositioning after LSG(reduction group), and 32 patients only had the gastric incisions sutured and reinforced(control group). The preoperative baseline data and perioperative data of the patients were collected. The frequency scores of PONV, visual analogue scale(VAS)scores, and verbal descriptive scale(VDS)scores between the two groups of patients postoperatively were compared. Results There was no statistically significant differences in surgical duration, reinforcement suture time, and intraoperative blood loss between the two groups(P>0.05). Within 0-12 hours, 12-24 hours, and 24-72 hours after surgery, the frequency score, VAS score, and VDS score of PONV in the reduction group were higher than those in the control group(P>0.05). Conclusion Reduction of the greater omentum during LSG may decrease the occurrence and intensity of PONV in patients.
