Mediating effect of psychological capital on mindfulness and psychological distress among men in infertile couples

Abstract: Objective To evaluate the level of psychological distress among men in infertile couples, analyze the relationship among mindfulness, psychological capital and psychological distress, and investigate the mediating effect of psychological capital on mindfulness and psychological distress. Methods A total of 300 men in infertile couples were surveyed with Mindful Attention Awareness Scale(MAAS), Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire(PPQ)and 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale(K10). The mediating effect of psychological capital was tested with Bootstrap. Results The mean score of K10 was(20.20±6.70), and 73.3% of the subjects had psychological distress. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the K10 scores were negatively correlated with the scores of MAAS(β=-0.341, P<0.001)and PPQ(β=-0.326, P<0.001)after significant demographic variables were controlled, and psychological capital had a mediating effect on the correlation between mindfulness and psychological distress. Bootstrap test indicated that the mediating effect was significant. Conclusion The incidence of psychological distress is high among men in infertile couples. Focus on individual mindfulness and psychological capital may be an effective way to improve psychological distress.
